June 14, 2010 -- "Spring Dinner at the Hollow," Initiation and Installation Dinner, Stewart Manor House, Quail Hollow State Park

Left: Hartville Lions Club President Dave Rennels presents a check to Shelly Quinn, Quail Hollow Volunteer Association, for 50% of the profits from the Hartville Lions Club Herb & Craft Fair food booth.  A portion of this money will be used for the park's Nature-for-All Trail, in which the Lions Club has taken a special interest.   The trail affords opportunities for those with physical disabilities to enjoy the park.  This presentation was made at the June 14th meeting held at the Stewart Manor House.

Right:  Edward O. Williams, center, was sworn in as the club's newest member by District Governor Elect Jeff Snyder, left.  Lion Sue Rennels, right, stood in for Pete Procaccio, as Ed’s sponsor.

DGE Jeff also installed the new officers and entertained the attendees with his unique wit and enthusiasm for Lions.

Hartville Pack 45 Cub Scout Leader, Mr. Paul Ivan, gave an update on the Pack.  According to Mr. Ivan, the goal of the Scouting program is to “put boys on the path to becoming great adults.”  With fifty-five Cub Scouts, Pack 45 is the largest in the Council.  The Hartville Lions Club carries and funds the charters of both the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts.  Pack members have been very successful: the 55 boys earned 256 awards, and all of them earned new levels; four have earned every pin possible; seven of the boys are moving on to Boy Scouting.  The Cubs perform service projects and fun activities, including: setting out flags for Memorial Day, a car wash fundraiser in July, McKinley Museum lock-in, camp-out at Berlin Lake, resident camp for Webelos, etc.  The greatest needs are central planning and continuity of leadership.  Mr. and Mrs. Ivan are to be commended for their dedication and service to the boys in this program, and to the community.

Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Perez visited to tell us about the responsibilities and activities of the Sheriff’s Office. There are 107 people working for the office, with about forty supported via contracts or grants.  The No. 1 budget item is the operation of the county jail, which needs to be modernized and updated.  Although the budget was reduced by $278,000 from last year, some special equipment has been obtained through the federal government for Homeland Security. Drug forfeitures also represent a source of funds.  Chief Deputy Perez invited the Club to tour the county jail, and possibly hold a future meeting there.

Right:  “Meals On Wheels” representative, Mr. Tom Delamater, explained details of this program in which the Hartville Lions Club is involved.  Some facts: meals are $4.50 each, with subsidies available; meals are prepared fresh daily at the commissary in Massillon, then delivered to the various distribution centers in Stark and Wayne counties; 2000 mid-day meals are served each week day; a five-day “nutrition pack” can be set up for those who are being discharged from a hospital.  The “Adopt-a-Route” program is very successful in several community-minded companies.  Perhaps the program’s greatest reward is the gratitude that the volunteers see in the eyes of the recipients.

After sharing some very funny stories, Lions Club District 13-D 1st Vice-District Governor, Jeff Snyder, talked to the Hartville Lions Club about the difference between joining the Lions and becoming a Lion.  He said that he had been a member of his Lions Club for some time before he truly became a Lion through the feedback and the good feeling that comes from helping someone less fortunate.  He stressed that it is important for us as Lions to be out in the community: visible, active, and available to help.

Ms. Kathy Spitale describes “The PrimeTime Programs.”  Distinct from Aultman Hospital’s Prime Time Health Plan, this is a public relations outreach of Aultman.  It is a social program aimed at adults age fifty and up, in which over 65,000 people from around the state are already enrolled.  In addition to “perks” at Aultman Hospital, the program offers health and well-being seminars, concerts, golf and bowling leagues, classes in yoga, photography, ballroom dancing, personal computer, Pilates, etc., as well as a wide variety of group tours.  Membership is free, and members do not have to affiliate with Aultman Hospital.  Some of our Lions are already members, and several more joined at our meeting.  Additional information and applications can be obtained by calling 330-363-6262 or 1-888-285-7746.

Karen Koch, Lake Township Chamber of Commerce, presented a proposal for “Hartville’s MAJOR Day,” a family-oriented celebration of the history of Hartville and Lake Twp., to take place next year, on October 16, 2010.  The theme will tie in with President William McKinley, often called “Major,” who lived and traveled in this area, and was active in the establishment of the Congress Lake Club.  The celebration’s events and activities tentatively include a 5K road race, an encampment and re-enactments, wagon rides, an historical train ride, marching bands, dancers, walking tours, contests, kids’ old-time games, celebrities, and food.  Any community members, as well as the Hartville Lions Club, can get involved in many ways, from planning, serving on committees, providing volunteers, to holding fundraisers during the event, such as chicken barbeque, runners’ breakfast, etc.  The next meeting of the steering committee will be in mid-October.  Those interested in assisting should see the Lake Twp Chamber of Commerce website (www.lakechamber.com), or call (330) 877-1268.
